International Water Issues

Population growth, development and climate change will likely contribute to a worldwide shortage of clean water in the near future. As world population increases, there will be ever more mouths to feed, and agriculture is very water-intensive. As countries develop and people get richer, a larger percent of the population will desire (and be able to afford) a higher quality of living, including higher per capita clean water usage. Of course, climate change will not decrease the amount of freshwater on earth (it may even increase it by melting glaciers), however, it will change weather conditions and climates. Many dry climates are likely to become even drier, while countries with heavy rainfall may be frequently flooded such that the extra water is not used productively or efficiently.
